Leap Second Announcement 2016
On July 6, 2016 the IERS announced that another leap second has been scheduled for UTC midnight at the end of December 31, 2016.
The Earth Orientation Center of the International Earth Rotation and reference systems Service (IERS), located at the Observatoire de Paris, France, determines when a leap second is to be inserted into the UTC time scale. A bulletin C is published once every six months to tell if a leap second is scheduled for the end of next June or December, or not. The GPS satellites will soon start to broadcast this information. GPS-based Meinberg LANTIME devices may generate an informational log messages when they receive this information for the first time. Other Meinberg GPS receivers will just show the information on the upcoming leap second in the monitoring programs shipped with the driver software, i.e. mbgmon.exe under Windows, and mbgstatus under Linux or FreeBSD.
The IERS and some metrology institutes have already provided updated versions of their leap second files to be used with NTP. A copy of the leap second file provided by the IERS is also available for download via the Meinberg web page:
LANTIME users are encouraged to update the leap second file on their LANTIME devices, e.g. via the LANTIME's web interface.
